Tuesday 28th April marks two international days related to workplace safety; World Day for Safety and Health at Work, and International Workers’ Memorial Day. Both dates are recognised worldwide and Safe Work Australia works to bring awareness to both events.
Safe Work Australia encourages everyone to promote this World Day today to recognise the importance of health and safety in the workplace. This year’s theme focuses on ensuring a healthy psychosocial working environment for all. Psychosocial hazards are hazards that arise from the design or management of work, the working environment, workplace machinery or equipment, or workplace interactions and behaviours that can cause psychological and physical harm. Common psychosocial hazards can include, but are not limited to:
- job demands
- low job control
- poor support
- lack of role clarity
- poor organisational change management
- inadequate reward and recognition
- poor organisational justice
- exposure to traumatic events or material
- remote or isolated work
- poor physical environment
- bullying and harassment, and
- workplace conflict, violence and aggression
As it the case with physical hazards, psychosocial hazards must be identified, addressed and managed effectively in order to maintain healthy and safe workplaces. Psychological hazard management is not something that should be brushed to the side or not given proper attention – psychosocial injuries usually have longer recovery times, higher costs and can mean more time away from work than physical injuries.
International Workers’ Memorial Day marks a time to remember those who have lost their lives because of workplace injury, illness or disease, and to renew organisational commitment to preventing workplace death. Data from Safe Work Australia shows that around 200 people lose their lives due to workplace incidents every year, and many more die due to work related diseases.
Many events are held on this day, with communities banding together to send a powerful reminder that behind every statistic is a person, and that every workplace death is one too many.
At Limestone Coast Solutions, we are continually promoting health and safety awareness – including psychosocial hazard awareness – to clients and students, educating others on what signs to look for and what their obligations are in creating a healthy and safe workplace. From nationally accredited qualifications to customised training sessions for workplace groups, our team can help your business stay informed and on top of its WHS requirements.
